Window Covering Safety Experts: Child Safety Tip #1

June 10, 2015 by Rick Carlan

From the Window Covering Experts: When first visiting a customer’s home, be it for a measuring appointment, sales call, or installation, there could be signs that this is an “environment of young children”. Learn to recognize these clues, keep an eye open, and always recommend Cordless and ‘child safe’ window coverings in these situations. #abcsafety

Know that children between the ages of 16 months, and 5 years old are most vulnerable.

Can Anyone Please tell me what ABC Day is all about?

June 2, 2015 by Rick Carlan

What is JUNE 2nd, and Awareness of Blind Cord Safety Day is All About ?!!

You know those times when your driving down the road and you see a daycare center or a place with little kids? and you quickly look at the outside of the building to check the windows just to see what kind of blinds they have in there?
And “something” runs through your head real quick that someday (when you have more time), your gonna stop in there and talk to the person in charge and make sure they “know” that they should have cordless blinds or child safe window coverings because there are little kids around?
Well, today is that day. Today is Awareness of Blind Cord safety Day, and today is the day I stop. I take the time. And I promise that by day’s end I find JUST ONE person who doesn’t know, and I’ll teach them. My efforts will come from a place of caring, of love and a wanting to help, all in an effort to stop kids from getting hurt on these things,in hopes that a little girl’s message gets paid forward. That’s what today is all about, for it was on this day in 2003, a babe was born who has everything to do with that “something” that tells me to stop and take the time.
Teach the ABC’s today and oh yeah, use love for that’s what today is all about.

‘Awareness Day’ announcement for June 2

May 31, 2015 by Rick Carlan

Non profit child safety initiative announces a day of remembrance and a little girl’s message

For Immediate Release Minneapolis MN: A 501-C (3) non profit foundation called the Awareness of Blind Cord Safety Foundation or the ABC’s has just announced that June 2nd will be recognized as “Awareness of Blind Cord Safety Day”.

The foundation, which started as a grassroots child safety initiative, has played a major role in creating “informed communities” by connecting with child care facilities and various window covering manufacturers to facilitate the collaboration of cordless window coverings to day care and childcare centers. These awareness events help teach the important message of keeping loose, dangling blind cords out of hands of children. The ABC’s goal is to make sure as many people as possible are aware and the safest option is to only have cordless and ’safe for kids’ blinds in environments where children live or frequent.

Rick Carlan, Vice President of the foundation believes that awareness is the key. “Should everyone know of the potential hazard that blind cords can have, only then will the danger have no choice but to reduce itself”. Our message is simple says Carlan, “…find and teach people that don’t know, because it’s the ’not knowing’ that is the bigger issue.“

June 2nd is being named as Awareness of Blind Cord Safety Day after Weslea Teraberry, who would have been celebrating her twelfth birthday this June 2. Weslea is the daughter of Chantal Teraberry, the president of the ABC foundation. Teraberry says ”We lost Weslea when she was four years old in 2008 to the chain of a vertical blind when we were stationed on a military base in North Carolina. As parents we took all of the standard safety precautions but this one got passed me. The problem is that window blinds are not a standard safety issue that is common knowledge.Moving forward and knowing that cordless is best, and if cordless isn’t an option right now, how to make your blinds safer for all children, is my ultimate wish.“

When asked how can having an awareness day help, Carlan said ” If everyone we reach just puts a little something on their Facebook, or other social media, about our message or this special day, that is the most we could ask for.”

Happy Awareness of Blind Cord Safety Day…June 2nd just might have the wheels to save a child’s life. Please share #abcsafety
